Four Business Lessons on Our Journey to Joy

October can be scary, not for Halloween but as a reminder that only three months remain to accomplish our goals for the year.

As I reflect on the end of this quarter and the month of September, I am filled with gratitude for the past five years of building my business full-time. My actual anniversary was September 18. Leaving my corporate leadership position, which had a high salary and benefits, was a significant decision. However, it turned out to be the best decision I could have made, given my career goals for the future.
In this newsletter, I would like to share four valuable lessons I have learned along the way, hoping they will inspire you to keep pushing forward and achieving your goals by the end of this year.

Leaping required me to:

#1 Believe -I had to look within to determine if I believed I could build a business. I’d had two companies previously and wanted this one to be THE right one.

  • Set your mind to believe, to KNOW, that you can!

I follow and practice the thought teaching of Lau Tzu, where our thoughts lead our actions.
The process looks like this:

Thought>Words>Actions>Habits>Character>Destiny

This diagram reminds us that when we believe, we can monitor our thoughts and self-talk. Negative self-talk can halt progress, while positive self-talk can propel us forward.

  • Practice affirmations to remind yourself just how good you are. "I am good" can be a start to your affirmation. It doesn’t have to be long and must be consistent, meaning you speak it at least once a day. Some people tell me they thought that saying affirmations was "fluffy" advice until they tried it and experienced the difference in their increased confidence. I thought it might be interesting for you to understand more about the value and power of saying affirmations, so click to read this article on, of all sites, WebMD.

Leaping reminded me the importance of:

#2 Consistency- Have you heard the phrase "Practice makes perfect"?

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell provided multiple examples of the importance of practice. His research demonstrated that a task becomes natural after 10,000 hours of training.

  • Create good habits:

Notice from the diagram above that even small, repeated actions can become powerful habits. Have you had the chance to read James Clear's book Atomic Habits? If not, I highly recommend it, as he shows how small changes can lead to remarkable transformations.

Have you ever felt motivated to start something, only to lose steam soon after, and feel disappointed with the results? This can happen in many areas of life, such as weight loss, acquiring new clients, or sticking to a workout routine. We all know that consistency is critical to achieving our goals, so it's crucial to establish routines like going to bed at the same time every night and eating a balanced diet. By staying committed to our actions, we are more likely to achieve the desired results.

John Maxwell says that your success is reliant upon your daily agenda.

Leaping reminded me of the importance of surrounding myself with:

#3 Good vibes- As I write this newsletter, I am listening to my Office DJ playlist.

  • Music means so much to me. It's like a superpower that can pump, soothe, or stimulate me, depending on my needs. When I want to unwind and reflect, my mellow playlist is just what I need. Artists like Dave Koz or Rick Braun create a peaceful atmosphere. But when I need to get creative, I turn up the volume on my workout playlist. Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey, or Ed Sheeran are some of my favorite artists on that list. Their music gets me going! And if I ever feel down, confused, or disappointed, my gospel playlist is my go-to. Listening to CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, or Kirk Franklin helps me feel better every time.

How about you? What kind of music do you like?

  • Inspiration- My office is a source of inspiration for me, with little quotes, poems, and positive messages adorning my walls.

I start by reading motivational messages from my three daily calendars each day. I remind myself to pause and look around for inspiration and good vibes. A beautiful photo of Maya Angelou with her poem, "And Still I Rise," reminds me to persevere. And the verse from Jeremiah 29:11 inspires me to trust in God's plan for me, one filled with hope and a future.

A poem that I hold dear to my heart that inspired my leap from my corporate job into building The Champ Group is from Anais Nin; let me share it with you here:

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
What can you add to your workspace to keep you focused and believing you can achieve?

Leaping reinforced the value of:

#4 Association -We become like the six people who we hang out with. Have you noticed that you enjoy the presence of certain people in certain seasons of your life?

  • Take a moment to reflect on the people you surround yourself with. Consider those who bring joy to your life and those who bring you down. It's essential to figure out who you encourage and who encourages you, as well as who you like having in your space. Spend more time with those who spread joy and wisdom, and try to reduce the time you spend with those who annoy you or bring you down.

  • Intentionally find new people to connect with and be willing to invest the time to become acquainted. I know that's challenging, and I've learned that a Zoom meeting or a phone call goes a long way to develop a relationship and understand how to support each other.

  • Stay connected with people that you are already connected with. In a world that is always on the go, taking time out for others can be challenging. I don't do this enough, I am working on it, though. But remember, it's always worth it. Whether it's a quick text to a loved one, attending a fun event with friends, or having a heartwarming conversation with someone, immerse yourself in the positive energy they provide. And always remember to give back that same kindness.

Let's embrace each day with positivity and move forward toward our goals. May joy be a constant presence in your lives, and may we lift each other to shine bright.
