Increase Your Influence To Lead Your Team

"It’s so hard finding good employees!" are words frequently heard from business owners.
The Great Resignation. The Great Attrition. Sigh!!!
Retaining the new hires and existing employees is another common conversation.

Upon research and discussion with many leaders, I've prepared three tips for you to Influence your team to show them you care, and inspire the good team members to remain loyal.
Maybe you are aware of them, so my question is five words…How well are you doing them? My mentor, John Maxwell says Leadership is Influence, nothing more, nothing less…

1) Communication – I know you know how important communication is-how well are you doing it?

  • Ask questions- the open-ended questions like: What, Where, When, How, Who, and Why? When you ask questions, it reinforces that you're curious which leads to the truth that you do care about them, and motivates them to tell you what’s really going on. If you ask closed ended questions, people quickly answer "yes" and "no" and you don’t get the chance to learn about them or what’s happening.

This week, in fact today, pay attention to the kinds of questions you’re asking and if you catch yourself asking closed ended questions, switch it up and I think you’ll be pleased with the extended conversations and relationship development you’ll experience. You’ll show you care, and your people will be more likely to follow you and buy into the direction and instruction you provide

  • Listen to understand – Listen 70% and Talk 30%.

2) Motivation- I hear so many managers tell me how hard it is to motivate their team members. My belief is that inner motivation stems from passion, purpose and feeling as though we belong. I remember that I used to try to motivate team members until I figured out that they had to be self motivated. We can though, stimulate motivation.

"The people who influence you are the people who believe in you" Henry Drummond

  • Nurture them- put your people first. Listen to them (we just addressed that under communication), and really hear them.

  • Understand what they say, don’t judge, listen to their experience and perspective

  • Make deposits into their emotional bank account- give compliments, encourage them, send them an email or a word of encouragement in your internal communication platform (chat, slack).

  • Pour belief into them- they will become more motivated, and you will expand your influence.

3) Vision Share – I am sure you are clear where you want your organization to be this year, and in the next three years. When is the last time you shared that vision with your team?

Engagement surveys continue to convey that having a purpose in work is a priority.

  • Invest time with your team to share your vision and describe the importance of how their daily tasks and goals impact the vision achievement of your department or company. Help them see that their piece of the puzzle contributes to the big picture.

  • Allow yourself to be vulnerable and tell them your concerns, and what you’re excited about. You don’t have to have all the answers, and just what if ---some of your team members have other ideas that can propel you to your desired destination?!?

I understand that employees seem to have so much power now than in the past. It probably feels frustrating and to be honest, a bit intimidating. Remember that as a leader, you get to be the person to mold your company, department, or team.

In closing, As a woman of faith, regardless of your faith a few good words can only help and I want to share this verse with you as a reminder of your ability...
God did not give us timidity, He gave us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
